Flood Insurance Requirements

Your lender will require you to obtain flood insurance if your mortgage is from an insured lender and your home is located in a high-risk flood zone.  If your home is located in a moderate to low-risk flood zone you will not be required to obtain flood insurance, although it's still recommended.  Keep in mind even if your home is not in a high-risk flood zone your lender can still require you to obtain flood insurance at any time.  

Flood Insurance Coverage

Flood insurance is available for apartments, homes, condos, and even businesses. Coverage for floods will help cover any damage to your personal property and building.  It can also cover:

• Appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, washers, and dryers, and clothes
• Personal possessions, such as furniture, electronic equipment, and clothing
• Plumbing and electrical systems
• A building along with the foundation
• A home along with the foundation
• Heaters, furnaces, and all other air conditioning equipment

Flood cleanup will cover debris removal as well.  Note this will also depend on the type of policy you choose, as every flood policy is not the same.
